How this Blog has Improved my Writing

Though this year has been very strange and confusing when it came to online learning, I still managed to improve my writing skills quite a lot. Through the weekly blogs I was able to get lots of experience writing for enjoyment, which improved my skills using rhetoric.

In my very first blog, I lacked any sort of purposeful rhetoric to convince the reader of my claim. In the blog, I referenced my silent book club book for ethos but any other examples of rhetoric would’ve been purely accidental.  When I wrote the blog I was writing it as an assignment, instead of something creative or fun. My blog didn’t have rhetoric because even I wasn’t passionate about what I was writing. I didn’t care about what the reader took away from my blog, as long as it was completed.

Most recently, in the Conversation with the world project there was huge improvement compared to my first blog. With this project we had the creative freedom to write about what we wanted. Being able to write about things I’m actually passionate about made writing feel less like a chore and more enjoyable. In the conversation with the world project I was able to chose and write about a topic very important to me, because of this I cared more about persuading the reader to agree with my view. This blog had examples of logos, ethos, and pathos. I included statistics, credible sources, and discussed topics that were meant to make the reader upset. By writing about something I find important, it became easier to use rhetoric to convince others of its importance as well.

Being able to write consistently about things you care about makes persuasive writing easier. While my skills are nowhere near perfect, writing these blogs has given me many opportunities to grow. I look forward towards next semester where we will hopefully continue writing for enjoyment as well as education.
